California State Teachers Retirement System

The California State Teachers’ Retirement System is the largest teachers’ retirement system in the United States. CalSTRS had a total membership of approximately 715,436 and assets of $96.7 billion as of June 2002. CalSTRS’ primary responsibility is to provide retirement related benefits and services to teachers in public schools from kindergarten through community college.

The State Teachers’ Retirement Board has exclusive control over the investment and administration of the Teachers’ Retirement Fund. The Board makes rules, sets policies, and has the power and authority to hear and determine all facts pertaining to application for benefits under the retirement system. The twelve-member Board consists of four ex-officio members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the State Treasurer, the State Controller, and the Director of Finance. The Governor appointed members of the Board include four members of CalSTRS, one retiree of CalSTRS, and three representatives from the general public.
